Suggestions on How to Dress
Avoid doing these things:
Avoid all greens, and colors such as bright oranges, yellows and lime greens, as they can also alter skin tones.
Avoid busy patterns, such as stripes and plaids.
Exact matching outfits - it might seem cute now to wear the exact same outfit, but in a few years, you will hit yourself for being so cheesy. (*smile*)
Short hemlines on shirts will make you look bigger.
Good things to do:
While blues are excellent all year, white, ivory, khaki and salmon are great against lush green foliage when shooting outdoors.
Burgundy, brown, tan and gray are nice late in the season. Darker clothing such as these not only photograph well, but make subjects appear more slimming and look more flattering on the body.
Teens and adults should wear long sleeves to cover elbows.
Accessories like funky necklaces, jackets, hats, scarves, sunglasses, etc. are great things to bring with you.
Wear fitted clothing. (Big, baggy shirts can make you look a lot larger than you are.)
Have appropriate shoes and socks. Many family portraits are full-body shots, so if you wear sneakers with your dress, you'll probably feel silly. If you plan to change clothes, bring shoes and socks to go with each outfit.
Women should wear natural-looking makeup. You may want to wear slightly more lipstick or blush than usual so it shows up in the picture. Take some spare makeup with you.
A WORD ABOUT GLASSES: Folks who wear glasses only part of the time are encouraged to remove them as glasses catch all sorts of reflections which aren'’t easily removed in Photoshop. Remember to remove them 15 or so minutes before the session to give any little marks on the bridge of your nose time to go away. If your glasses auto-darken in sunlight, bring another pair that doesn'’t. Or don’'t wear them at all. If you must wear glasses, your optometrist might be able to lend you a pair of empty frames that match your own.
